Sleep loss is a wide spread issue with serious physical and financial consequences. Music such as modern relaxation relaxation can impact upon psychological, physical and emotional states, which may explain anecdotal reports of its success being a normal sleep aid. However, there is a lack of systematic data on how widely it is used, why folks opt for music for a sleep aid, or what music works; hence the inherent drivers to music-sleep effects continue to be unclear. We researched music as being a sleep aid within the overall public with a mixed techniques data paid survey (n = 651) that scored musicality, sleep habits, and open text responses on what music will help sleep and why. In general, 62% of respondents said that they used music to help people sleep better. They reported two musical genres containing 545 musicians. Regression tree modelling shown that younger individuals with higher musical involvement were a lot more inclined to use music to assist sleep. Thematic analysis of their available text answers generated four themes that described why folks believe music can help sleep: music provides unique properties which stimulate sleep (Provide), music is part of a regular sleep pattern (Habit), music induces a bodily or mental state conducive to sleep (Condition ), and music blocks an internal or external stimulation that will otherwise interrupt sleep (Distract). This survey provides new evidence into the association between music and sleep at a people that ranged widely in age, musicality, sleep habits and stress levels. In particular, the results highlight the varied pathways of effect between sleep and music. Diversity was discovered both in music choices, which represented idiosyncratic preferences in place of any musical structure, and in the reasons why music encourages good sleep, which moved beyond simple physical/mental comfort.
